Wheat
Amber Durum Wheat
There are two sides to a wheat seed. On one side you can see the embryo at one end of the seed. On the other side of the seed you will find a crease. These two items can be used to describe seeds. Sometimes wheat seeds can be wrinkly, which may cause you to confuse them with triticale. However, when doing seed identification you should look at more than one seed. Do not look for exceptions in the seed lot. File Name: amberdurumwheat-689crop.JPG
Durum Wheat
Durum wheat is the hardest of all wheat seed. It often appears as if light is passing through the seed. This is called transluscent. Durum does not have a brush. File Name: Durum_wheat.JPG
Hard Red Winter Wheat
Wheat threshes "free" when harvest. Like rye and triticale (but unlike barley and oat), the palea and lemma do not adhere to the seed at harvest. Sometimes this is referred to as a "naked" seed. File Name: Hard red winter wheatcrop.jpg
